Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

Ford Pro's Solutions can reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by approximately 25%1.

What is TCO?

Ford Pro’s Total Cost of Ownership model captures the annualized cost to operate a single vehicle, factoring in efficiencies driven by Ford Pro’s solutions.

Multiple scenarios were modeled to account for regional, fleet size, and vehicle line differences.

Why is it relevant for fleets?

Fleet vehicles are revenue-generating assets for the business. Therefore, TCO is the primary metric used to measure the financial performance and profitability of that asset over its entire lifecycle.

It moves the evaluation beyond the initial sticker price to encompass every expense incurred from acquisition to disposal. This focus on TCO is fundamental because it directly impacts the fleet's bottom line, operational efficiency, and overall business viability.

What elements comprise TCO?

Ford Pro’s model includes traditional TCO inputs such as Vehicle Payments, Insurance, Title and Registration, Depreciation, Maintenance & Repair, and Fuel.

  • Vehicle Payments – include the purchase price of the vehicle, financing costs, taxes, and fees associated with vehicle acquisition.
  • Insurance – includes the monthly premiums required to keep the vehicle insured.
  • Title & Registration – associated fees paid to the state to register your vehicle including license plate fees; these fees are typically renewed annually
  • Depreciation – refers to the decrease in value of an asset over time due to use, wear and tear, age and obsolescence. This represents the lost equity value associated with an asset over time.
  • Maintenance & Repair – Maintenance refers to the routine, scheduled service performed to prevent problems and Repair refers to unscheduled work done to fix a problem that has occurred.
  • Fuel – the cost associated with refueling the vehicle over time to enable its continued use.
Ford Pro’s model then accounts for the Cost of Downtime which all fleets recognize as a productivity killer but many haven’t reflected in their own TCO models and prices in Software costs to help track the fleet and make it more efficient.
